Moving here, Faridabad
Moving to Faridabad
A first-month guide for families new to Faridabad: power and piped gas, the rent agreement and police verification, the Violet Line, school transfers and your out-of-state car.
The first week
Before the boxes are open, photograph the electricity meter, and the gas meter if there is one, with the readings visible. Then ask the landlord or seller for the last paid bills for power, water and gas. They give you the account numbers and tell you which company you are dealing with.
If you are renting, sign the rent agreement and start the police tenant verification in the same week. The verification form asks for the landlord's details anyway.
Electricity, water and gas
Electricity in Faridabad comes from Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam, which everyone calls DHBVN. New connections are applied for on DHBVN's e-connection portal, and bills can be paid on the DHBVN website. Rented flats usually keep the owner's account. Some group housing societies bill power through the maintenance office, so ask there first.
Water depends on where you live. Parts of the city are served by the Municipal Corporation of Faridabad, and the Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority (FMDA) has taken over bulk supply and is connecting societies in Greater Faridabad. In 2023 many were still on borewells or tankers. Ask the RWA what your building uses, or look at the name on the last water bill.
Piped gas is supplied by Adani Total Gas, and Faridabad is on the new-connection form on the Adani Gas website. The form asks for the property owner's details and documents, so tenants need the landlord's help. Apply early. In March 2026, during the LPG shortage, the company said it was getting over 10,000 applications a month, and some families had waited months to be switched on. A 2023 regulator order gave Indraprastha Gas part of the district, and Adani has appealed it, so check the name on any existing gas meter.
Paperwork
Rent agreements in Haryana go on stamp paper. E-stamps are generated through the state's e-GRAS portal. Stamp duty depends on the rent and the length of the lease, so check the current rate before you buy. Under the Registration Act, a lease of more than a year has to be registered at the sub-registrar's office, which is why so many agreements here run for 11 months.
Tenant verification is done online through the Haryana Police citizen services (the HarSamay portal) or at your local police station. Faridabad Police has its own tenant verification page. The Haryana Police fee list shows Rs 50 for a tenant verification request. Keep the PDF.
Address changes on your RC and driving licence go through Parivahan. For the RC you need Form 33 and proof of the new address, among other papers listed on mParivahan.
Getting around
The Delhi Metro Violet Line runs through the city from Sarai and NHPC Chowk at the Delhi border down to Escorts Mujesar, then on to Sant Surdas (Sihi) and Raja Nahar Singh in Ballabgarh. An extension to Palwal was approved in October 2025 but is not open yet.
You can buy a smart card at a station counter, or use DMRC's Momentum 2.0 (Delhi Sarthi) app for QR tickets. DMRC is slowly moving from its own cards to bank-issued National Common Mobility Cards, so your bank may be able to give you one.
City buses are few. In 2024 Faridabad had around 50 CNG city buses, and the plan to add electric buses had stalled. Most families use the metro for Delhi and autos or app cabs for everything else. Agree the fare before you get into a private auto.
Schools
If you are moving mid-year, collect the transfer certificate and the latest report card from the old school before you leave. Schools here are affiliated to CBSE or the Board of School Education Haryana. Private schools set their own mid-session rules, so ring admissions first.
For government schools, the Haryana school education directorate told schools in April 2024 that children without Aadhaar or a Parivar Pehchan Patra (Haryana's family ID) must still be registered.
RTE admissions to reserved seats in private schools happen once a year. For 2026-27 the schedule ran from March to early May 2026. See our school admissions page for the general timeline for entry classes.
Your car or bike
Under Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, once a vehicle has been kept in another state for more than twelve months, the owner must apply there for a new registration mark. In practice that means an NOC from your old RTO, then an application through Parivahan to the registering authority in Faridabad. Ask the transport office whether Haryana road tax is due before you start.
Rules on older petrol and diesel vehicles in Delhi NCR have changed more than once since 2025. Check the current position from the Commission for Air Quality Management before you bring an older car.
Small things locals know
Ask what the society's power backup covers. In some buildings it runs lights and fans but not the AC.
Sector numbers do not run neatly in order on the ground. Send cab drivers and delivery riders a location pin, not just a sector number.
The Badarpur border crossing is slow at peak hours, so take the metro for weekday trips into Delhi.
