Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, recently addressed the pressing issue of traffic congestion in Delhi during a session in the Lok Sabha. He emphasized that the escalating congestion is a multifaceted challenge, influenced by factors such as rapid population growth, socio-economic dynamics, and the increasing number of vehicles on the roads.
Major Infrastructure Projects Underway
To tackle these challenges, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has embarked on several significant infrastructure projects in and around Delhi, with a cumulative investment exceeding ₹51,000 crore. Key projects include:
- Delhi-Meerut Expressway: Aimed at providing a swift and seamless connection between Delhi and Meerut, this expressway is expected to reduce travel time substantially.
- Dwarka Expressway: This project is designed to improve connectivity between Dwarka and other parts of Delhi and Haryana, easing traffic on existing routes.
- Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-2): Slated for completion by June 2025, UER-2 is anticipated to function as a third ring road, alleviating congestion on the current Ring Road and Outer Ring Road.
- DND Interchange and Kalindi Kunj Bypass: These initiatives aim to streamline traffic flow between Delhi and neighboring regions, reducing bottlenecks at critical junctions.
- Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE): Designed to divert non-destined traffic from entering Delhi, the EPE helps in reducing vehicular load within the city.
Enhancements in Public Transportation
Beyond road infrastructure, significant strides have been made in public transportation:
- Delhi Metro Expansion: The metro network now spans 395 kilometers, serving over 7.1 million passengers daily. A study from 2024 indicates that this expansion has led to a daily reduction of approximately 644,252 vehicles on Delhi roads.
- Yamuna River Cruise – A Sustainable Alternative: The recently introduced solar-hybrid river cruise on the Yamuna offers an eco-friendly transport alternative. This initiative aims to reduce vehicular congestion by encouraging water-based transport solutions. Designed for both commuters and tourists, the cruise provides a scenic and sustainable way to navigate Delhi, easing the burden on road networks while promoting cleaner mobility.
Addressing Immediate Traffic Concerns
The Delhi Traffic Police conducted a survey in March 2024, identifying 134 locations with notable congestion issues, primarily due to ongoing construction, encroachments, and heavy traffic volumes. These findings were shared with relevant agencies to implement remedial measures. Additionally, in October 2024, the police highlighted 128 roads with poor conditions and 97 damaged or encroached footpaths, prompting necessary repairs and clearances.
Conclusion
The comprehensive approach adopted by the central government, in collaboration with local authorities, underscores a commitment to mitigating traffic congestion in Delhi. Through the development of robust infrastructure projects, enhancements in public transportation, and the introduction of innovative solutions like the Yamuna River Cruise, these efforts aim to provide residents and commuters with a more efficient and less congested urban environment.
