A glimpse into the heritage home that’s now the official residence of Mandi’s fiery new Member of Parliament
New Delhi | May 2, 2025 —
Kangana Ranaut, Bollywood star and newly elected Member of Parliament from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi constituency, has officially moved into her government-allocated residence in Lutyens’ Delhi. But this isn’t just any MP house — it’s a sprawling, restored century-old bungalow steeped in history, and now thoughtfully reimagined to reflect Kangana’s journey from cinema to politics.
A Bungalow With a Story to Tell
Located in the heart of Delhi’s VIP zone, the bungalow is one of the many heritage properties built during the British Raj era. These homes, originally designed for high-ranking officers and ministers, are known for their grand proportions, colonial facades, and sprawling lawns.
This particular bungalow—now Kangana’s home—has seen decades of political history and was previously occupied by multiple senior parliamentarians. Though records of exact occupants aren’t public, sources suggest it has housed both Congress and BJP stalwarts over the years. The building was in need of significant care, and Kangana made it a personal mission to restore it with sensitivity and vision.
“Not Easy to Restore a Century-Old MP House,” Says Kangana
Taking to Instagram, Kangana shared visuals of her housewarming ceremony and expressed her gratitude for the restoration work:
“Finally got some time to shift to the Delhi MP house. It was not easy to restore a century-old MP house. Thanks dear @design_by_darshini for doing this,” she wrote.
The interior design and heritage restoration were handled by Darshini Designs, known for blending old-world architecture with modern utility. Kangana’s focus was on retaining the soul of the place while adding subtle personal touches to reflect her journey as an artist and public servant.
What’s Inside? A Blend of Vintage Elegance and Personal Touches
From the visuals Kangana shared, the restored residence now features:
- Intricate wooden paneling and original marble floors
- Antique chandeliers and period-correct furniture
- Hand-painted portraits of Kangana from her film career
- Quiet, meditative corners that mirror her Himachali roots
A kalash puja (traditional house entry ritual) was held on Akshaya Tritiya, attended by close family members including her sister-in-law Ritu Ranaut and young nephews.
The ceremony included Kangana entering the home balancing a brass pot on her head—a tradition in many Indian households symbolizing good fortune and a fresh start.
A Metaphor for Reinvention
This bungalow isn’t just a residence. For Kangana, it mirrors her life’s reinvention—from small-town girl to one of Bollywood’s most outspoken actors, and now, a public servant. The walls of this home, once home to seasoned politicians, now echo with the voice of a new generation—bold, unapologetic, and fiercely rooted in India’s cultural ethos.
Darshini, the designer, shared her experience:
“Restoring a space like this was not about redesigning—it was about rediscovering its original soul. Kangana had a clear vision, and every detail was handled with deep respect for the house’s legacy.”
Why This Move Matters
Kangana’s move into the bungalow comes at a time when she is embracing her new responsibilities as a lawmaker. Her victory in Mandi was seen as a significant political moment, and the shift to Delhi marks the beginning of her full-time presence in national politics.
At a time when heritage structures across India face neglect or demolition, her choice to preserve and showcase the architectural legacy of her official residence also sends a subtle but powerful message—of respecting the past while stepping confidently into the future.
