Park, Delhi
Lodhi Garden
Fifteenth-century tombs, old trees and wide lawns off Lodhi Road. Delhi's favourite morning walk, and free to enter.
What it is
The garden grew around tombs of the Sayyid and Lodi rulers, who held Delhi before the Mughals. The octagonal tomb of Muhammad Shah and the tomb of Sikandar Lodi are at either end. The Bara Gumbad and the Shish Gumbad, with traces of blue tile, stand in the middle. In between are lawns, a small lake with a stone bridge, a bonsai house and a lot of very old trees.
It is looked after by the NDMC. On any morning you see joggers, laughter clubs, birdwatchers and people walking dogs.
Getting there
Jor Bagh on the Yellow Line is closest to the Lodhi Road gates. Khan Market on the Violet Line is a short walk from the other side. There is some parking along Lodhi Road, which fills early on weekends.
When to go
From April to September it opens at 5 am, and from October to March at 6 am. It closes at 8 pm all year. Winter mornings are the nicest, with sun on the domes and mist on the lawns. Weekend afternoons get crowded with families and picnics.
Good to know
There is no entry fee. Paths are paved, so it works with a pram. Cafes and restaurants line the road outside, but there is little food inside, so bring water.
