Surajkund

A 10th-century stepped reservoir in the Aravallis and, beside it, the ground where the Surajkund crafts mela runs every year from late January into February.

What it is

The kund is a semicircular stone basin with steep stepped sides, traditionally credited to the Tomar king Surajpal. Feroz Shah Tughlaq rebuilt it with stone steps in the 14th century. It fills in the monsoon and is often dry by summer, so do not expect a lake.

Next to it is the mela ground. The Surajkund International Crafts Mela started in 1987, and each year picks theme states and a partner country. The 2026 edition, the 39th, ran from 31 January to 15 February, with Egypt as partner and Uttar Pradesh and Meghalaya as theme states.

Getting there

The nearest metro is Badarpur Border on the Violet Line, about 4 to 5 km away, with autos and cabs outside. During the mela special buses run from Delhi, Gurugram and Faridabad. Parking is in numbered lots near the gates, and the traffic police divert heavy vehicles for most of the day.

When to go

For the mela, a weekday morning is the calm option. Weekends are packed and the drive back towards Badarpur can take as long as the visit. Dates for the 2027 mela had not been announced at the time of writing, so check before you plan.

Good to know

The mela ground is large and mostly unpaved, so wear proper walking shoes. Book your cab home early in the evening, before everyone else does.
