Raja Nahar Singh Palace

Ballabgarh's 18th-century palace, tucked into the old market at Ambedkar Chowk. Haryana Tourism runs it as a small heritage hotel with a restaurant.

What it is

Rao Balram began building the palace after he came to power in 1739, and his family kept adding to it until about 1850. It is a two-storey sandstone building around a central courtyard, with carved arches and stone jaalis, a Darbar-e-Aam and a Rang Mahal. Two of the four original corner towers survive.

Its most famous resident, Raja Nahar Singh, joined the 1857 revolt. The British arrested him in December 1857 and hanged him in January 1858. The metro station at the end of the Violet Line carries his name.

Getting there

Raja Nahar Singh station on the Violet Line is the nearest. From there, take an auto into the old market. The palace sits in a congested bazaar, so parking a car nearby is hard work.

When to go

Haryana Tourism has held its Kartik Cultural Festival here every November since 1996. It is the easiest time to see the courtyard full of life, but confirm this year's dates with Haryana Tourism first. Otherwise, a winter lunch in the restaurant makes a good reason to visit.

Good to know

It is a working hotel with six guest rooms, not a museum, so call ahead if you only want to look around. Haryana Tourism lists a restaurant, bar and lounge alongside the rooms, and staying a night is the best way to see the courtyard in the quiet of the evening.
