Moving here, Gurugram
Moving to Gurugram
Your first month in Gurugram: power and water in a society or a builder floor, the rent and police paperwork, the metro and city buses, and getting the children into school.
The first week
Before the boxes are unpacked, find out who actually bills you for electricity and water. In Gurugram that depends on the kind of building you live in, and the answer decides what you transfer and where.
Then get the rent agreement signed and ask your landlord to start police verification. Keep a folder with Aadhaar, PAN, passport photos, the agreement and the last utility bills. The society office, the bank and the school will all ask for them.
Electricity, water and gas
Electricity in Gurugram comes from one company, Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN). In an independent house or builder floor, the meter is with DHBVN, and a change of name or a new connection is done through the DHBVN website.
Most high-rise societies work differently. Many have a single-point connection: the society takes power from DHBVN in bulk and the builder or RWA bills each flat, often with backup power and common areas added. DHBVN started unified billing in 2022, where each flat gets its own DHBVN bill, but only a small share of societies had switched by 2024. Ask the maintenance office which system yours uses.
Water is shared between agencies. GMDA supplies bulk water to the city, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) handles distribution in its areas, and in private colonies the developer runs the supply. In HSVP sectors, new connections are applied for online on the HSVP website. Check the name on the last water bill.
Two companies hold piped gas rights in different parts of the city, Haryana City Gas and Indraprastha Gas (IGL). Ask the society or a neighbour which one serves your block.
Rent agreement, police verification and address
Haryana uses e-stamp paper for stamp duty; paper stamps were phased out across the state from March 2017. Check the current duty with the sub-registrar or on the e-stamping portal rather than trusting a broker's figure. A lease longer than a year has to be registered, which is why most agreements here run for 11 months.
Tenant verification is compulsory in Haryana, and the police have warned that people who skip it can be charged. It is done online on Har Samay, the Haryana Police citizen portal, or at the local police station. The landlord usually files it; you supply ID and the agreement.
Update your Aadhaar address on the myAadhaar portal once the agreement is in hand.
Getting around
The Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro runs into Gurugram and ends at Millennium City Centre Gurugram, the station everyone still calls HUDA City Centre. The Rapid Metro, which loops through Cyber City and Golf Course Road, has been run by DMRC since October 2019 and meets the Yellow Line at Sikandarpur. Buy a smart card at any station in the first week.
City buses are run by Gurugram Metropolitan City Bus Limited (GMCBL). Its Gurugaman app shows live bus locations, routes and fares. The first electric buses joined the fleet in July 2026, with more due in batches.
For short trips most people use autos and app cabs. Agree the auto fare before you sit down.
Schools
Ask the old school for the transfer certificate before you leave, along with the last report card. Mid-year places depend on the school, so call several.
Classes 10 and 12 are harder to change. CBSE accepts a family move as a reason, but wants proof such as a transfer order and the new address, and it advises changing schools in Class 9 or 11 instead. Check the current CBSE notice for the year.
Haryana's RTE admissions to private schools ran from March to May for 2026-27. The Directorate of School Education has told schools not to refuse a child registration for want of Aadhaar or a Haryana Family ID. For entry-class dates, see our admissions page.
Your car or bike
Under section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, a vehicle registered in another state can be kept here for up to 12 months, and must be registered in Haryana within that time. You will need an NOC from your old RTO; the Parivahan website handles most of the forms.
If you work for a central or state government body, a PSU, or a private company with offices in four or more states, you can choose a BH series number when you next buy a vehicle, which avoids this on future moves.
Check the age of your car before you bring it. Gurugram has impounded diesel vehicles over 10 years old and petrol vehicles over 15, under Supreme Court and NGT orders.
Small things locals know
In April 2026 the district administration gave households in areas with gas pipelines 90 days to apply for PNG, after which LPG supply there is to be phased out. If your block has a pipeline, apply for PNG early.
Some MCG services, including new water and sewer connections, have asked for a Haryana Family ID (Parivar Pehchan Patra).
Water supply in parts of the city has been uneven for years, and summer is the hardest stretch. Ask neighbours how often the tank runs dry before you sign.
