Moving here, Noida
Moving to Noida
The first month in Noida, sorted in order: power and water in your name, the rent agreement and police verification, a metro card, and your child's school transfer.
The first week
Before the boxes are unpacked, ask your landlord or the society office three things: who sends the electricity bill, whether the flat has piped gas, and when the water bill is due. In many high-rises the answers are not what you expect.
Get the rent agreement signed and registered early. Police verification, the gas connection and the school admission all ask for it as proof of address.
Electricity, water and gas
Noida city is supplied by Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam, usually called PVVNL. Greater Noida is largely served by Noida Power Company (NPCL), a separate company. Near the boundary, or in a newer township, check the company name on the last bill.
PVVNL's website handles new connections through the state's Jhatpat portal, plus ownership transfers, name changes and prepaid meter recharges. Many older high-rises still run on a single-point connection, where the builder or society buys power in bulk and bills each flat. Then your bill comes from the society, not PVVNL.
Water and sewer connections in Noida are handled by the Noida Authority. Most tenants pay through the society or the landlord, so ask before opening an account yourself.
Piped gas in Noida comes from Indraprastha Gas (IGL). Tenants are usually asked for the rent agreement or a no-objection letter from the landlord. Only one domestic connection is allowed per home, so if the flat already has one, ask about a name transfer rather than a new connection.
Paperwork
In Uttar Pradesh the rent agreement is stamped and registered through the state's Stamp and Registration Department. The state cut stamp duty and registration charges on rent agreements sharply in late 2025, and the cabinet approved a further cut in January 2026. The reduced rates were notified for a limited period, so check the current charge on the department's website before you pay anyone.
Tenant verification in Noida goes through UP Police. The UPCOP app lists it among its services, along with verification of domestic help. Whoever files it, keep a copy of the acknowledgement with your rent papers.
Once you have the registered agreement, change your address on Aadhaar through UIDAI's myAadhaar service. Your voter ID moves through the Election Commission's voters' portal. The form for shifting home is Form 8, but during a roll revision the commission may ask for another, so read the portal's instructions.
Getting around
Two metro systems run here. Delhi Metro's Blue Line comes into Noida, and the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) runs the Aqua Line between Noida and Greater Noida. They have issued separate smart cards. A shared QR ticket for the Blue and Aqua lines was launched in September 2025, and a common card was announced. Ask at a customer care counter what covers your route before buying. NMRC counters take UPI.
Since August 2026 there is an air-conditioned skywalk between Sector 51 on the Aqua Line and Sector 52 on the Blue Line. Before that it was nearly a kilometre on foot.
City buses are newer. The Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna authorities began running electric buses in June 2026, on routes that include Botanical Garden, Sector 62, Greater Noida West, Pari Chowk and the new airport at Jewar. Autos and app cabs fill the gaps. Agree an auto fare before you get in.
Schools
Ask the old school for the transfer certificate and an attested report card before you leave. A TC from a school on another state board has to be countersigned by that board, which can take time.
In CBSE schools, a mid-year move into Class 9 or 11 because of a job transfer or a family shift is allowed. The new school applies to CBSE with proof such as transfer orders or a registered rent agreement. For some categories the board's cut-off is 30 September, so if you are moving in the second half of the year, ask the school early.
The school year in UP starts in April, and private schools set their own admission calendars. Seats under the Right to Education quota are filled through an online state lottery; for the 2026-27 session it ran in three phases in February and March. See our admissions page for the current dates.
Your car or bike
A vehicle registered in another state can be used here for up to 12 months. Before that runs out it has to be re-registered in Uttar Pradesh. Ask your old state's transport office what it needs first, because the paperwork starts there.
If you work for the government, defence, a PSU, or a private company with offices in four or more states, look at the Bharat (BH) series instead. Since late 2022 an existing registration can also be converted to BH on payment of the tax due.
Small things locals know
If IGL's pipeline reaches your building and you get a written notice from them, take it seriously. Under a central order from March 2026, LPG supply can be stopped three months after that notice if you don't apply for piped gas.
Summer power cuts are a real thing in parts of Noida. Ask the society what the backup covers, and whether it runs the lifts and water pumps, before you sign.
