Temple, Ghaziabad
Dudheshwar Nath Mandir
Ghaziabad's best-known Shiva temple, in the old city. Calm on most mornings, and packed for Mahashivratri and the Mondays of Sawan.
What it is
Locals call it Dudheshwar Mahadev. Temple tradition holds that the Shivling here is swayambhu, self-manifested, and that it came to light where cows would release their milk, which is where the name comes from. Stories link the site to Ravana, and the temple counts itself among the oldest in the region.
It is looked after by mahants of the Juna Akhara tradition, and there are samadhis on the grounds. The temple describes itself as an upa-jyotirlinga linked to Kashi Vishwanath.
Getting there
The temple is in the old part of the city, reached through narrow, crowded roads. Any auto driver at Ghaziabad Junction or Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda) metro will know it by name. Parking is very limited, so on festival days leave the car at home.
When to go
Early morning, after the first aarti, is the calmest time. Mondays are busy all year. During Sawan and on Mahashivratri the queues stretch well outside, and the police put up barricades and traffic diversions around the temple for a few days.
Good to know
Dress modestly and leave your shoes outside. Bhandaras are held on special days. Hours run later into the night during the big festivals, so ask locally if you plan a late visit. Carry as little as you can in the festival crowds, and keep small children close.
