Sultanpur National Park

A shallow lake and marsh about 15 km west of the city that fills with migratory birds in winter. Go between November and February, as early as you can.

What it is

Sultanpur is a small national park built around a jheel, a seasonal lake, in Gurugram district. Each winter ducks, geese and waders fly in from the north and settle on the water alongside the resident birds. A count reported in 2025 put the season's migratory birds at about 50,000, from 82 species.

A path runs round the lake with watchtowers along the way. Near the entrance there is a small museum and interpretation centre.

Getting there

It is on the road from Gurugram to Farukhnagar, about 15 km west of the city. There is no metro or handy bus, so drive or take a cab, and fix your ride back in advance because cabs can be hard to find out there.

When to go

November to February is the main season. Arrive at opening time, when the birds are most active and the light is soft. Winter mornings can be foggy, so give yourself extra time on the road. In 2025 the park opened for the season on 1 October, at the start of Wildlife Week.

Good to know

There is an entry fee and a separate camera charge; check the current rates at the gate. Bring binoculars, warm layers and water. Keep your voice down near the watchtowers. A slow walk round the lake takes a couple of hours.
